"Turn around! I want to take a photo!"
My mom said this in every country we visited. Athens, Greece. Xcaret, Mexico. Tokyo, Japan.
At the time, I rolled my eyes. I was young and didn't want to stop living the moment just to pose for a picture.
I thought she was being annoying.
What I didn't understand at that moment was that she was actually documenting the most important part of her life.
When I was 20, my mom passed away suddenly. No sickness. No heads up. No goodbyes.
Then came the most heartbreaking treasure hunt of our lives.
After her funeral, my siblings and I frantically gathered every photo we could find. We tore through drawers, flipped through albums, searched through old hard drives.
Hundreds and hundreds of photos. Pictures of us at every age. Every birthday. Every vacation. Every milestone.
But she was barely in any of them.
Twenty years of family memories, and our mom was missing from her own story.
Except for one place.
Those Tokyo Disneyland studio portraits she insisted on for her annual birthday celebration Disney trips when she let us skip school. The cheesy ride photos she bought even when we looked terrible.
Those "embarrassing" photos became our most sacred possessions.
That realization changed everything for me, and I vowed to be in as many photos as possible with my children.
My kids are 1 and 11, and they already have thousands of photos of us together.
And that’s why I created Dreamgraphy — to make sure moms, parents, and couples traveling all around the world can appear in their own photos.
